APPLETON, Wis. — Local and statewide efforts have been made to improve student safety after a teacher was convicted of abusing disabled students.
A recent state law expanding mandatory reporting requirements to all Wisconsin school employees cited Mary C. Berglund’s abuse of children at Janet Berry Elementary School, the Post Crescent reports. The Appleton Area School District also changed its reporting policy to require all employees to report suspected child abuse or neglect.
On Dec. 21, Berglund was placed on probation for three years after she pleaded no contest and was found guilty of five misdemeanor battery counts and one count of felony child abuse.
