Published: January 22, 2015

El Camino College police shot and wounded a man at a campus parking structure Thursday.

The incident began around 11 a.m. when campus law enforcement received a call from Peyton A. Dingman, 18, that he was holding a female hostage, reports the Daily Breeze. When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect pointed his weapon at them. Officers then opened fire, reports MyNewsLA. No hostage was at the scene when officers arrived.

Dingman’s weapon turned out to be an Airsoft pellet gun wrapped in black electrical tape, which made it appear to be a real firearm, reports CBS Los Angeles. The suspect had also written a suicide note.

Dingman, who formerly attended the college, sustained injuries and was taken to a local hospital. No officers were hurt during the ordeal.
