EL CAJON, Calif. — A 28-year-old man who ran from police while on the Johnson Elementary School campus is in stable condition at a hospital after being shot by officers. A second man is in custody.
Police responded to a disturbance call on the campus and attempted to talk to the men, San Diego 6 News reports. The men ran from police in separate directions.
Police said that one of the suspects jumped out at an officer who was chasing him around a building. The officer responded by firing one shot, which passed through the suspect’s wrist and into his chest. The suspect was then transported to a hospital.
The second man escaped, but investigators told San Diego 6 News that a person of interest was taken into custody this morning.
At the time of the shooting, police received a second call about two juveniles tagging outside of the school. Police took both into custody on suspicion of vandalism and curfew violation. It is not known whether these incidents were related.
The officer who shot the suspect, in accordance with department policy, has been put on administrative leave pending an investigation.
