HUNTINGTON, W. Va. — A security officer at Cabell Huntington Hospital was cut with a pocket knife while trying to stop a suspect from breaking into a vehicle owned by a hospital employee.
James Smith was questioning the suspect, Shane Burton, in the hospital parking lot when Burton fled, WSAZ News reports. Smith pursued him along a nearby street, where a bystander helped him to tackle Burton and take him into custody.
Burton cut Smith on the arm during the struggle. Smith was treated at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
The hospital employee, whose car had been broken into, told security officers that her wallet had been taken out of her purse, which was in the trunk of her car. Some of the wallet’s contents were discovered in Burton’s pocket; the employee’s checkbook and an emergency hammer were found in a nearby alley.
Burton is charged with a misdemeanor count of breaking and entering, as well as a felony count of malicious wounding. He is being held at Western Regional Jail on a $20,000 bail.
