WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court upheld President Obama’s healthcare law in a ruling on Thursday.
The ruling means that the government, by 2014, will be able to impose tax penalties on those who do not have health insurance, the Los Angeles Times reports. The mandate is expected to raise about $4 billion a year to help pay for healthcare coverage.
Chief Justice John G. Roberts said that the healthcare law’s required expansion of Medicaid violates states’ rights, and that the federal government cannot threaten states with the loss of all federal funds if they refuse to expand the program.
