HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – New York State University (SUNY) President Kermit Hall died in a swimming accident Aug. 13 near a South Carolina beach.

Hall and his wife Phyllis, whose condition is still uncertain, were pulled out of the water by a passer-by and Hall was later pronounced dead. SUNY officials say they are still trying to determine what happened in the accident.

Hall was president of Utah State University (USU) for four years before coming to SUNY and served as a professor of history, vice chancellor, executive dean and provost at many other universities around the country.

According to a USU spokesman, Hall’s death is not only a loss for all who knew him, but for higher education in general.
