The 2012 National Survey of Counseling Center Directors (NSCCD) found that more students seek professional counseling assistance; however, most colleges do not have enough or proper staff to help students with serious psychological problems.
The survey, which included 293 counseling centers that represent 2.7 million students who are eligible for counseling services at their universities, found that 2.2 million students nationwide sought professional counseling.
Jerald Kay, a professor and chair of psychiatry at Wright State University, noted that many counseling centers do not have permanent psychiatrists and need more personnel. For students in grave need, they often leave the ill-equipped campus counseling centers and seek better care elsewhere, USA Today reports.
Some schools, such as the University of Notre Dame and Virginia Tech, have hired case managers to help students with mental health issues.
