Study: Teen Dating Violence Has Lasting Effects

Published: December 10, 2012

Results of research released on Monday indicate 30% of teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18 experience some form of abuse in their heterosexual dating relationships.

Approximately one in five boys and girls say they’ve been the victim of only psychological violence, while 2% of girls and 3% of boys said they experienced just physical abuse. Ten percent of girls and 8% of boys say they’ve experienced both. Victims of both genders are two to three times more likely to be in abusive relationships when they become adults. The results appear in the current issue of Pediatrics.

  • Female victims are more likely to drink heavily, smoke, experience depression and think of suicide.
  • Male victims are more likely to engage in anti-social behaviors, including delinquency, smoke pot and think of suicide.
