DENVER — College students who binge drink report being happier with their social lives than non-binge drinking students, according to a new study.
The study surveyed 1,595 students at a liberal arts college and found that many students said they did not want to binge drink, but felt that they had to in order to fit in, CBS News reports. Further analysis found that while race, wealth, class, sexual orientation and Greek life participation contributed to social status, binge drinking also played an important role — both high and low status binge drinkers had higher social satisfaction than their non-binging peers.
The findings could explain how campus culture fosters binge drinking, and why it is so hard to eradicate, according to study researcher Carolyn Hsu, a sociologist at Colgate University in New York.
