The 12-step program used by Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous could be beneficial to teens receiving treatment for alcohol or drug abuse, according to a new study.
Youth who attended meetings for these groups during their treatment experienced significantly better substance use outcomes, HealthDay reports. This was especially true of teens who attended at least one meeting per week or more, according to John F. Kelly, associate director of the Center for Addiction Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Youth who were in contact with a sponsor or participated verbally in meetings had an even better outcome than those who merely attended, Kelly said.
