Students Hold Vigil to Protect Joe Paterno Statue

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Students began a vigil to protect the statue of Joe Paterno on Penn State’s campus after calls were made for its removal.

Two seniors at the university, Mike Elliot and Kevin Berkon, organized an impromptu gathering at the statue Tuesday after a plane flew over campus with a banner that read, “Take the statue down or we will,” the Associated Press reports. Police told the students they couldn’t sleep at the statue but could put a tent there.

Paterno was fired after assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with sex abuse of children on and off campus. He later passed away.
