KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A student from Pellissippi State Community College is suing the school for allegedly violating his First Amendment rights. The school prevented him from handing out religious literature and preaching on campus.
Mark Dew, 44, was told that he could not preach because sharing one’s faith is prohibited under the Tennessee Board of Regents’ solicitation policy that is enforced on the campus, Charisma News reports. In order to speak or dispense literature, a student must apply three weeks prior to the activity and pay a $30 fee.
School officials informed Dew in November that he could not preach or hand out literature because he was not part of a recognized student group.
