Student Kills Peer in Campus Courtyard

CORAL GABLES, Fla.

A 17-year-old Coral Gables Senior High School student has stabbed and killed a classmate after a fight broke out at the campuses courtyard on Sept. 15.

The victim, Juan Carlos Rivera, had just started his sophomore year at the school. The stabbing occurred after first-period classes ended. Rivera was knifed at least three times with possibly a box cutter, according to The Miami Herald.One student is in police custody and another is being held for questioning, according to the report.

The school was placed on lockdown and students were allowed to leave if accompanied by a parent. School officials brought in psychologist trained in crisis management to talk to staff and students, according to USA Today.
