Student Dies During Law Enforcement Training Run at Fla. Campus

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Police are investigating the cause of death of a law enforcement trainee who died Tuesday after a physical conditioning run at Eastern Florida State College (EFSC).

Mohamed Hassen, 26, was enrolled in the Law Enforcement Academy, which is part of the college’s Public Safety Institute. He was in his second day of training, where recruits participated in a series of events called Physical Abilities Assessment, used to determine a student’s physical condition, WFTV.com reports.

Officials began noticing Hassen’s signs of distress as he jogged and walked the course around EFSC’s soccer field. Despite police officers performing CPR on the man, attempts to revive him failed.

School administrators maintain that they only conduct the exercises in the morning — the cooler part of the day — and encourage students to stop if they feel ill.
