Student Death In Yale Machine Shop Prompts Safety Review

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Yale University is limiting student access to power tools after an undergraduate student was killed last Wednesday while operating a lathe in a campus machine shop.

Michele Dufault, a senior astronomy and physics major, died of asphyxia by neck compression after her hair became caught in a lathe as she worked on a project, ABC News reports. She was found by other students who were working in the Sterling Chemistry Laboratory where the shop was located, according to Yale President Richard C. Levin.

Yale officials are conducting a review of safety policies and practices on campus. Until the review is completed, the university will limit undergraduate access to power equipment to specified hours. Safety monitors will be present at all times.
