A 21-year-old Harvard student was expelled from the university because of her alleged involvement in the May 19 dormitory shooting that resulted in the death of a non-student, according to The Times. She believes she was singled out because she is black and poor.
Chanequa Campbell, a resident of a rough, working-class Brooklyn, N.Y., neighborhood, was one month away from graduation when the shooting occurred.
Authorities believe that Campbell gave Jordan Copney, 20, a security pass, which allowed him to gain access to Kirklan annex, a dormitory at the school. The dorm is where Copney is suspected of shooting 21-year-old Justin Cosby in a drug deal gone bad.
For her part, the New York Times scholarship winner says she lived in a completely separate dormitory from where the incident took place. Furthermore, during the incident, she was taking a final and had no knowledge of anything that happened.
Cosby, who did not attend the university and allegedly sold drugs, was visiting friends on campus when he was confronted by Copney. Several shots were fired during their confrontation, with one hitting Cosby in the stomach. After the incident, Cosby ran up a street before collapsing. Several hours later, he died in a hospital.
In regards to Campbell’s expulsion, Harvard officials said the university had taken the right course of action.
