Student Banned From Graduation Over Facebook Comment

Published: July 17, 2011

RALEIGH, N.C. — A St. Augustine College student has filed a lawsuit against the college for banning him from participating in the graduation ceremony.  Roman Caple was banned from the ceremony after he posted a comment on the college’s Facebook page.

Two days after a tornado hit Raleigh on April 16, the college announced on its Facebook page that it would be reopening, the Student Press Law Center reports.  Many students still lacked electricity and the move sparked outrage, prompting a town hall meeting.

Caple, then a senior, posted a comment encouraging students to attend the meeting. He wrote, “Here it go!!! Students come correct, be prepared, and have supporting documents to back up your arguments bcuz SAC will come hard!!!! That is all.”

In a press release, college officials said Caple was fueling “an already tense situation” and that there were previous incidents involving Caple that factored into the college’s decision.
