YPSILANTI, Mich. — Eastern Michigan University administrators are building a plan to improve public safety for students on and off campus.
The decision stems from recurring homicides that have occurred near campus. University administrators have met with private landlords for apartment buildings near the university, encouraging them to install security camears, upgrade locking systems, improve lighting and starting neighborhood watch programs, Crain’s Detroit Business reports.
For its part, EMU plans to continue lobbying local governments to install cameras in public areas. Other options could include grant-writing opportunities on regional safety projects or new technology, or multidisciplinary programs that will inform campus officials of developing threats.
