BOSTON — Steward Health Care System has replaced the security staff at four of its Massachusetts hospitals with 50 outsourced security officers from New-Jersey-based contractor APG Security.
Security personnel at Quincy Medical Center, Merrimack Valley Hospital, Holy Family Hospital and Saint Anne’s Hospital found out they were being replaced, effective immediately, on Jan. 7, minutes before their shifts were about to start, The Boston Globe reports. All were told that they could reapply for a job with APG Security, but would have to take a pay cut as much as $10 an hour.
Steward representatives said the healthcare system took this action to cut costs, and hired APG Security because of its expertise with behavioral health patients. Some APG employees had already been working at the hospitals, being trained by the security personnel they would later replace, according to The Boston Globe.
