The Missouri Department of Public Safety; the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and Gov. Bob McDonnell; and North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue have urged their communities to participate in tornado drills this month.
Missouri’s annual statewide tornado drill will be held Tuesday, March 13, according to the State Emergency Management Agency’s Web site. NOAA Weather Radios will alert listeners that the tornado drill has begun, and tornado sirens will also sound across the state. The drill is part of Severe Weather Awareness Week.
Gov. McDonnell of Virginia proclaimed March 20 as Tornado Preparedness Day, the Altavista Journal reports. As part of a statewide drill on that day, the National Weather Service will send a test tornado warning, which will initiate a tone alert and a broadcast message on NOAA Weather Radio.
Gov. Perdue recently declared March 4 through March 10 Severe Weather Awareness Week in North Carolina, and schools and government buildings throughout the state held tornado drills on March 7, the Lumina News reports.
