CONWAY, S.C. – Police arrested a man after a 15-hour standoff in front of Conway Medical Center. The man surrendered on Oct. 22.

The standoff started on the evening of Oct 21 when hospital security asked Robert Gustav McGowan, Jr. to move his vehicle from the ambulance bay. When McGowan refused, local law enforcement, SWAT and a negotiation team arrived at the scene.

It was determined that McGowan was carrying a rifle or a long-barreled shotgun.

Hospital officials locked down the facility as a precaution. Patients receiving treatment in the emergency room were moved to a different area and ambulances were also diverted.
