St. Mary’s College Officers Want Arrest Powers

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — Public safety officers at St. Mary’s College have applied for a special police commission that would give them the authority to arrest and detain suspects on or near campus.

Currently, officers do not have the authority to make arrests, The Washington Post reports. Other Maryland public college officers, however, have this authority — either they have the special commission granted by the Maryland State Police, or the college has a fully commissioned police force.

All 12 officers at St. Mary’s College applied for the commission, which must be renewed every two years. David Zylak, the interim director of public safety at St. Mary’s College, said that he expects to hear back about the commissions soon.
