ROSEBURG, Ore.- Just before classes were to begin on Feb. 23, a Roseburg High School sophomore was shot by a distraught freshman who then walked to a restaurant and put the gun to his head as more than 30 customers watched.
Shortly thereafter, police confronted the suspect who then surrendered.
The victim, Joseph Monti, 16, was shot by the unidentified 14-year-old from behind with a large-caliber handgun and hit four times in the chest and abdomen. He remains in the hospital but is recovering from his injuries.
According to police, Monti and the suspect knew each other. Despite this, the motive for the shooting is unclear.
Immediately after the shooting, Roseburg High and a neighboring elementary school were locked down.
