NEW YORK — Health officials have voiced their concern over a new trend among today’s youths in which they consume alcohol by inhaling it through a vapor.
YouTube videos, posted by teens and 20-somethings, teach young people how to “smoke” alcohol through their drink bottles. Unlike drinking alcohol, where the liquid metabolizes through one’s liver, inhaling alcoholic vapors directs ethanol to the lungs, the blood stream in the brain. The result leads to rapid intoxication to the point that inhalers do not realize how quickly they have gotten inebriated, NBCNewYork.com reports.
Health officials, such as Dr. Robert Glatter at Lenox Hill Hospital, note that absorbing alcohol through vapors proves extremely risky, as teens may not know when to stop inhaling. Furthermore, Glatter cites that after a person has drunk too much, the body expels alcohol through vomit. However, the brain cannot flush out alcohol, so it is very dangerous.
