SIA Offers Support for School Security Initiatives

Published: February 4, 2013

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Following the deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the Security Industry Association (SIA) has formed a committee to work with lawmakers on adopting new school security initiatives.

SIA Board of Directors Chairman Jay Hauhn sent a letter to President Barack Obama stating that SIA members are committed to working with the administration, Congress, law enforcement and the education community to develop reasonable public policy solutions that may help to avert school shootings.

“We understand that school safety is a complicated problem requiring input and expertise from various components of the private and public sectors,” Hauhn wrote. “A comprehensive solution to secured schools must foster collaboration across many sectors.”

SIA represents more than 430 businesses and various technology leaders that work closely with local school officials across the country to develop security solutions to help keep classrooms safe. The organization supports a holistic approach to school security that includes funding for school security assessments; investment in technology, such as digital video cameras and access control systems; and emergency preparedness training for education and law enforcement personnel.
