FRANKFORT, Ky. — In the early hours of Sunday morning, a shooting occurred on the campus of Kentucky State University (KSU), leaving two individuals injured. The Frankfort Police Department is actively investigating the incident, which took place near Young Hall at approximately 2:35 a.m.

According to initial reports, multiple occupants of a dark-colored passenger vehicle opened fire on a group of individuals walking on campus. Eyewitnesses reported hearing between 15 to 20 gunshots.
As a result, two people were struck; one sustained minor injuries while the other was seriously injured, reports LEX18. Both victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The identities of the injured parties have not been disclosed, but Kentucky State University confirmed that neither of them are current students of the institution.
In addition to the victims’ injuries, Young Hall and a KSU Police vehicle sustained damage from the gunfire, reports WHAS.
KSU Police Department’s Response
The shooting prompted an immediate lockdown of the KSU campus, which was lifted a few hours later. To ensure the safety of the campus community, KSU has implemented heightened security measures, permitting only registered students with valid IDs to access residence halls. The university has also increased patrols by campus police and security personnel.
In a statement, Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo, President of Kentucky State University, addressed the situation:
“Our students deserve to learn and thrive in a safe environment. We remain fully committed to protecting our campus community and will take every step necessary to safeguard their well-being.”
Frankfort PD’s Ongoing Investigation
The Frankfort Police Department, leading the investigation, has stated that they are pursuing all available leads. They encourage anyone with information regarding the shooting or who may have witnessed suspicious activity around the time of the incident to contact them at 502-875-8523.

Assistant Chief Scott Tracy of the Frankfort Police emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that an “outsider” was involved in the incident, and that the investigation is ongoing.
