Shasta College Attempts to Close Campus Fire Department

SHASTA, Calif.
Published: February 24, 2009

In an effort to cut budget spending for the spring semester, Shasta College administrators are looking to close down the campus’ fire hall. The community college-run fire department is the only of its kind in California.

With the Redding Fire Department located only two miles from the campus, administrators say it is too expensive to keep the campus department open. However, the college’s fire hall is popular among students for its firefighter-training program. The fire hall and the fire academy share equipment and personnel.

The community college is currently facing a $2 million budget shortfall. The fire department and fire hall cost nearly $350,000 a year to maintain.
