Sexual Assault Prevention Workshop To Be Held Sept. 15

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –  Northern California’s AB 1088 Bootcamp: A Workshop for Two-Year Colleges and Rape Crisis Centers will be held at Sacramento City College (SCC) for law enforcement personnel, health care staff, student services experts and rape crisis center professionals on Friday, Sept. 15.

The Northern California AB 1088 Bootcamp will be presented at SCC’s Student Center, located on 3835 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento, Calif. Free parking is available in the South Parking Lot. The workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude at 1:00 p.m.

Two of the more than 80 attendees representing 33 community colleges who attended the Southern California workshop last month recommended that their Northern California colleagues attend.

“The workshop was well-organized, had good content, resources and presenters,” said Rob Bachmann, director of the Student Health Center at Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa, Calif. Gloria Lopez, the health services coordinator at Santa Monica College, added: “The strengths of this training included the community speakers as well as the experts.”

The two bootcamps were offered this summer in accordance with legislation that requires California community colleges to provide incoming students education on preventing sexual assaults. Called the “Mandatory Orientation: Sexual Violence Prevention” act, AB 1088 requires “the governing board of each community college district [as well as the University of California and California State University systems], in collaboration with campus-based and community-based victim advocacy organizations, to provide, as part of established on-campus orientations, educational and preventive information about sexual violence to students at all campuses of their respective segments.”

AB 1088, authored by Assembly Member Jenny Oropeza (D-Long Beach), also “requires each campus of the California community college to post sexual violence prevention and education information on the campus Web site.”

Those in Southern California who missed last month’s workshop are encouraged to attend the one in Sacramento. The registration deadline is Monday, Sept. 10, according to Irina Bordiujevici, AB 1088 Bootcamp coordinator. “We have several slots available, but reservations are coming in quickly,” she said. RSVP’s should be E-mailed to Bordiujevici at AB1088rsvp@yahoo.com.

The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office provides guidance for the 72 districts and 109 colleges that constitute the California community colleges system. The largest system of higher education in the nation, the California community colleges provided educational, vocational and transfer programs to more than 2.5 million students during the academic year 2005-2006.
