Security Officer Shot at Maine Hospital

PORTLAND, Maine – During his break, a 27-year-old security officer at Mercy Hospital was fatally shot Sept. 7.

Hospital employees discovered James Angelo Otok in a fenced-in parking lot after hearing gunshots. The wounded victim was treated in Mercy’s emergency room, and was then transferred to Maine Medical Center where he died.

Witnesses said Otok had contact with two individuals before shots were fired around 4 a.m. The suspects ran in opposite directions after the incident.

Police are unaware if the shooting was random. They are offering a $20,000 reward to anyone with information about the suspects.

Security officers at the hospital are currently unarmed. Otok’s funeral will be held Sept. 13.
