ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A gunfight between rival teen gangs and an off-duty Secret Service agent at an Annapolis shopping mall has prompted police to monitor more diligently Annapolis High School.
The shooting occurred the night of Nov. 18 when two rival gangs whose members were composed of Annapolis High School students and graduates began fighting in Westfield Shoppingtown’s food court.
When an unidentified, off-duty Secret Service agent attempted to defuse the situation, 18-year-old Javaughn Adams fired his weapon at him, wounding the agent. The agent pulled his service handgun and returned fire, hitting Adams twice. Both men were airlifted to a Baltimore trauma center, where their injuries were declared non-threatening.
Tahzay Brown, 18, was another youth shot in the melee. He was treated for a gunshot wound to his leg and released later that same night. Police do not know who shot Brown.
Annapolis High Principal Donald Lilley will be calling for a school wide assembly after the Thanksgiving Day weekend in order to address the school violence problem and keep the mall shooting from escalating even further. For months, Annapolis High students have been organizing themselves into gangs and brawling with one another.
Superintendent Kevin Maxwell will be assigning an administrator to help relieve the volatile atmosphere at the school. One police officer has already been assigned to the school. Metal detector portals, he says, will not be installed.
