The parents of a sixth grader with autism are claiming their son was beaten by another student in the cafeteria of a Kansas City middle school last week.

The boy’s mother, Blake Kitchen, says she’s “sad and angry” her son sustained a cracked skull, fractured jaw and ear damage that may require surgery, the WDAF Kansas City reports. The beating allegedly occurred at Liberty Middle School in suburban Kansas City.

Kitchen says she warned the school about her son’s attacker a month ago in a letter sent to the principal, adding “it could have been avoided.” Her son spent four days at Children’s Mercy Hospital last week and returned Tuesday after starting to bleed again.

The Liberty School District said in a statement that they are cooperating with police and the incident is being reviewed.
