CHATANOOGA, Tenn. – State-, district-, and building-level school safety teams will be formed and charged with developing school safety plans as part of legislation passed by Tennessee’s state Senate on April 26.

Sponsored by Sen. Roy Herron, D-Dresden, the “Schools Against Violence in Education Act,” calls for a district-wide school safety plan and a building-level school safety plan to address crisis intervention, emergency response and emergency management. According to the law, the plans would follow a template set by a state-level safety team. The commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education would form the state safety team.

The K-12 Subcommittee of House Education reviewed the bill May 1.
