PORTLAND, Ore.—School officials are updating how visitors are managed in the Portland Public Schools district after a Skyline Elementary School student disappeared Friday during the school’s science fair.
Visitors are now required to sign in upon entering the school. Additionally, school officials, security services and other related parties are looking into safety procedures for releasing students as they leave school, reports KATU.com.
The security measures are a result of 7-year-old Kyron Horman‘s disappearance. Horman was last seen walking around with his stepmother to view science fair projects around 8:45 a.m., according to CBS News.
An investigation revealed that Horman’s teacher marked him as absent when he did not show up for class. School officials did not inform the family that Kyron had not been in class.
District officials said that a number of people who aren’t usually at the school were there because of the science fair.
Additionally, district officials said that 45 students were absent from the school Monday, more than double what is normal.
