AUSTIN, Texas — The FBI has partnered with the University of Texas at Austin to investigate anonymous hoax phone calls being made to parents of students, in which the caller claims the students have been kidnapped.
Two different parents have received calls from a person who demanded a small amount of money be transferred into a foreign bank account, the Associated Press reports. Authorities said no students have been kidnapped.
Investigators do not yet know how the callers are getting the parents’ contact information.
According to KXAN, the scheme has been around for about three years, and it has occured in some fashion in 19 states.
