San Francisco School District Releases School Climate Survey

SAN FRANCISCO
Published: February 13, 2009

A recent report by the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) revealed that nearly 900 middle and high school students have carried a gun to school at least once last year. However, 46 percent of high school respondents and middle school respondents said they felt safe at their school.

According to the results, 620 firearms were carried into SFUSD high schools in the past year. The actual number of gun carrying incidents in schools may be larger, as most of the students who report carrying a gun to school report carrying a gun four or more times in the previous year.

According to district officials, the findings show a slightly lower rate of weapon incidents at school when compared to national trends.
