SAN DIEGO – San Diego State University’s (SDSU) expansion plans are being criticized by the city of San Diego, the Del Cerro community and Alvarado Hospital.
All three groups say SDSU is underestimating the impact the expansion would have on traffic, the environment and area neighborhoods. The project includes additional classrooms, offices, housing, a student center and a hotel, and would be completed by 2025.
The groups, which all sent letters opposing a draft report, say SDSU should pay for a greater share of road improvements and public works projects. They also want greater student housing.
Plan proponents, however, say the revised plan took into consideration concerns previously expressed by the community. The initial plan was approved by CSU trustees in 2005, but the plan was revised in response to a State Supreme Court decision.
Funding issues are also a significant concern for opponents of the plan who say they want a guarantee from the California legislature before construction begins.
