A patient at a hospital in Charleston, South Carolina was arrested September 1 after assaulting 14 people before being detained.
The patient, whose name is not being released, became angry when he was told he couldn’t eat until took his medication, according to live5news.com.
Charleston police were called to Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital around 5:30 p.m. when the patient threw a cup of ice at the nurse and started threatening hospital staff.
The patient proceeded to run around the hospital “swinging at anyone close to him” as he tried to steal a keycard from staff members to exit the building.
The patient used fists and elbows to hit nurses and members of the hospital’s security team. Some witnesses say they also saw the patient throwing objects and using weapons, such as metal hooks from restraints and a hole puncher, to attack hospital staff.
Eventually he was subdued and taken into custody. The patient was booked at Al Cannon Detention Center and faces several charges of third degree assault and battery. Additional charges are pending as three nurses were sent home before officers got a chance to speak with them.
The hospital released a statement confirming staff followed security procedures and saying they have opened an internal investigation.
