A South Carolina school district has decided to end its contract with school resource officers and hire internal security officers for the 2015-2016 school year.

Dorchester District 2, a district with 23 schools, will begin hiring its own school security officers next school year to make school security more cost effective, according to live5news.com.

Currently the district uses 13 school resource officers, or SROs, from the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and the Summerville Police Department.

District officials cited several ways the decision will improve school security. The district plans to hire a security officer for each school and the officers will stay at the schools the entire day. Currently school resource officers leave the school if there is an emergency nearby.
