PASADENA, Calif. — Eight months after taking the position at Pasadena City College (PCC), Chief of Police Stanton Perez will have to resign from his position, effective Dec. 12, due to an eligibility issue with his retirement program.
The PCC Board of Trustees hired Perez after serving a long career with the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Since his hiring, Perez became a hit with the campus community. He set up new programs, such as bicycle theft prevention and registration, rape aggression training and child safety seat inspection, the Pasadena City College Courier reports.
However, a state law passed on July 1 — three months after Perez’s hiring — prohibits CHP retirees from receiving a state pension in addition to working full time for a state agency or community college. PCC has named Sergeant Steven Matchan as interim chief until a new candidate fills the position.
PCC officials have hired Perez to teach three classes during the spring semester, including Homeland Security, Criminal Procedure and Community Relations.
