LOS ANGELES – Researchers have discovered a phenomenon that occurs in teenagers’ brains that may cause them to be moody and overreact.
According to an article recently published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, a calming hormone, THP, produced by the body during stressful times appears to act in exactly the opposite way in teenagers. Researchers found that during adolescence, mice have extra-high levels of a second kind of receptor that causes anxiety when THP attaches to it.
In other words, THP calms adult and pre-pubescent individuals, while it causes stress in adolescents.
Researchers say this may cause teenagers’ reactions to stress – be it tears or anger – to be amplified and difficult to control.
