JOPLIN, Mo. — Money given to the Joplin Schools Tornado Relief Fund will be used to give necessities such as food and beds to students affected by the tornado, according to Superintendent C.J. Huff.
Seven students and one teacher were killed in the tornado that struck May 22, GateHouse News Service reports. Many of the students already lived in poverty, and since the disaster they do not have adequate clothing and food.
David Humphreys, president and CEO of the Joplin-based TAMKO Building Products Inc., and his wife Debra donated $250,000 to the fund and offered to match community and business donations dollar for dollar up to an additional $250,000.
Huff said the district is fully insured, so the damage done to eight of the district’s 19 school buildings will be covered by insurance. Therefore, the money from the fund will go directly to students in need.
