REDLANDS, Calif. — A teacher at Redlands Unified School District was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of child sex abuse.
Riverside Police responded to the home of 52-year-old Elvin Vereau on Sunday following reports of a family disturbance, according to ABC7. During the investigation, law enforcement officials said they were told that a female juvenile had been sexual abused by Vereau over several years. Detectives then launched a follow-up investigation that led to Vereau’s arrest on multiple sexual abuse charges.
Riverside Police Spokesperson Officer Ryan Railsback said the alleged victim was under the age of 10. Detectives believe there could be more victims.
“The suspect’s a teacher, he’s around lots of kids,” Railsback said. “And even though he works at a high school and our victim is a child, a minor, there could be some more victims who have not come forward.”

“Our top priority is, and always will be, the safety and well-being of our students,” Superintendent Juan Cabral wrote in a statement. “Every employee must pass a series of background checks, including a Department of Justice check, prior to starting to work with our students. This process also includes the requirement for all employees to maintain good legal standing that is consistently monitored by our Human Resources department.”
Vereau is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on $2 million bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday for an arraignment on five felony counts.
