A prisoner was missing for several hours after the third escape from a hospital in Newark, New Jersey in the past six months.
Police say Michael Majette, 40, left a University Hospital bathroom to slip out of police custody early in the morning of August 26, according to nj.com. Majette was then recaptured at midnight on the 26 on the 200 block of Littleton Avenue.
Majette, who was taken to the hospital after complaining of knee pain, is facing charges of robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and other weapon-related offenses.
Campus Safety had previously reported on an escape from University Hospital in March, when Elijah Shabazz left a guarded room undetected. Then in June Martin Sanchez, 34, walked out of the facility and was caught an hour later.
Following Sanchez’ escape, hospital and police authorities changed criminal custody procedures. The agreed upon changes included no longer allowing criminals to wear civilian clothes and hospital officials attending chiefs of police meetings in the county.
Now, amidst anger of the third escape, the two officers involved have been suspended indefinitely without pay as the preliminary investigation continues.
