R.I. College Constituents: We Don’t Want Cameras on Campus

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Officials at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) are facing opposition from the campus community and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) after the college announced that it planned to install security cameras at two campuses.

CCRI administrators plan to deploy 30 cameras at its Lincoln, R.I.-based site and 25 cameras at its campus here at a price of $600,000, Providence Journal reports. Officials maintain that the cameras will help deter crime and give campus police the ability to cover more ground.

Opponents of the project, including CCRI staff members and the Rhode Island Affiliate of the ACLU doubt the cameras will deter any crime and believe the surveillance cameras will be an invasion of privacy.

Campus police said their intent is not to become “Big Brother,” but to keep campuses safe.
