Published: October 18, 2009

An irate Nanaimo Regional General Hospital psychiatric patient shot at unarmed security guards on Oct. 13 after he was denied privileges to leave the hospital. Fortunately, his weapon was only a replica nine millimeter pellet gun.

The patient was quickly restrained and unarmed. Hospital spokesman Gary O’Brien said the situation may have played out much differently if the armed officers had arrived at the scene first, reports BClocalnews.com.

No charges have been filed against the patient. It is unclear how the patient obtained the pellet gun, but the hospital is conducting an investigation to ensure all protocols were followed properly.
