MEXICO CITY — Police arrested 176 protesters at three teachers colleges in the western state of Michoacán, where dozens of students hijacked buses and delivery trucks at the schools for a week.
Students began the protests in response to plans to require them to take English and computer sciences courses. Many protestors believe that the colleges should prepare educators to teach in rural areas where basic skills are more of a priority, reports CBS News.
For a week, protestors held bus and delivery drivers at the campuses, which cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars per day, according to Michoacán officials. The incident prompted police to raid the three colleges, where masked demonstrators fought with officials with rocks and fireworks. Ten officers suffered injuries — three seriously.
