As many as 75 protesters demonstrated outside UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau’s campus residence on Dec. 11 in opposition to the recent fee hike in California State schools.

Two students and six non-students were arrested on charges of suspicion of rioting, threatening an education official, attempted burglary, attempted arson of an occupied building, vandalism and assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

According to reports, protesters threw torches at Birgeneau’s residence and broke windows, lights and planters. The protest-turned-riot occurred just before midnight. A majority of the crowd dispersed once police arrived at the scene.

The Chancellor and his wife were not injured in the attack.

On Dec. 11, police arrested 66 people on trespassing charges after students and non-students occupied the university’s Wheeler Hall. According to the university, at least 24 of those arrested were not students.

The occupation began five days prior as protesters in the hall held a “teach-in.” Campus police arrested the alleged trespassers without incident.
