BROOKLYN, N.Y. – A package containing a noose and a racially charged letter was received by the principal of Canarsie High School Oct. 22. The principal is black.
Canarsie’s principal, Tyona Washington, is in her first year at the school.
The noose was made from three-foot-long, half-inch-thick piece of cotton. Police said that while the letter did not make any direct threats, it stated that enough rope would be given for Washington to hang herself. It also included a racial slur and statements such as “white power forever.”
The letter was found at approximately 10:30 a.m. It was signed with the name of white administrator at the school; however, it is believed that the signature was not authentic.
Authorities are still investigating, however there are no suspects.
This is the eighth incident in the New York area involving the discovery of a noose. A few weeks prior, a noose was placed on the doorknob of the office of a black professor at Columbia University.
Washington remained at the school throughout the remainder of the school day, police said.
