NORTH LOGAN, Utah – A gun-wielding man was shot several times by a police officer in the emergency room at Cache Valley Hospital Saturday after he challenged the officer.
The suspect, 34-year-old Jason James Burr, entered the hospital around 8:10 a.m., and made unspecified demands and produced two handguns, prompting the hospital to go into lockdown mode, Salt Lake Tribune reports.
As hospital security tried to talk Burr down, he confronted two Adult Probation and Parole officers and allegedly pointed he weapons at them.
As many as four shots rang out, and Burr was struck three times. He was flown to University Hospital in critical but stable condition.
No one else was injured during the incident.
Meanwhile, Burr’s family said the suspect was on pain pills for a back problem and was sent to the emergency room because he was told he needed immediate surgery. Family members said that Burr returned to the emergency room for help after hospital officials allegedly turned him away, Salt Lake Tribune reports.
