Virginia State Police are investigating the incident and are not commenting on whose version of events are included in the criminal complaint.
The complaint states that Burfield entered Gava’s office Thursday afternoon and hugged the professor. The professor then allegedly touched Burfield’s butt. Burfield felt uncomfortable and attempted to leave the office, but Gava grabbed Burfield. Burfield then “reached in her purse to retrieve a box cutter and slashed Gava in the back of the head,” according to the complaint.
Burfield then left the office and was detained by faculty members until campus police arrived.
The college sent a timely notification email to current students, faculty and staff members informing them that an arrest had been made and there was no continuing threat.
Neighbors of Dr. Gava, 68, said the incident seemed out of character for the professor.
Burfield is not currently enrolled at the school.
